Student representation on board to be reconsidered by trustees

A Student Senate proposal requesting student voter represen-tation on several Board of Trustees' subcommittees was met with a lukewarm reaction by the board this week but will be reconsidered at its next meeting on Jan. 20, a trustee said.
"It's not a thing that is just done," said David Atha, chairman of the board's Student Affairs committee, of the proposal.'There is substantive
rationale and lot of consideration involved."
The Student Affairs committee had to approve the proposal — which asked for one voting member and one ex-officio student member on six of the eight board subcommittees — before the entire board voted on it.
Atha attributed the board's reaction to the proposal partly to lack of preparation.
"It could have been more expository in the thought process," he said. "Some of the feeling is that it could have been
presented in a more persuasive manner."
Student Senate President Phil Clement expressed surprise at the board's reaction.
"We thought we had a good proposal," Clement said. "We exhausted every reasonable route and talked it over with every relevant official."
Committee members who helped draft the proposal, including undergraduate and graduate senators, had worked and researched it for two (See Proposal, page 13)

The recent outbreak of measles on campus has prompted the university to investigate the feasibility of mandatory immunization for all students, an official at the Student Health Center said.
"1 will be sending half a dozen letters to experts in v;*ology and neurology to ask them for their opinions before we come up with any decisions," said Dr. Allan Ebbin, executive director of the health center.
The Los Angeles County Health Department has proposed a prematricula-tion immunization requirement. Ebbin said the county, the American College
Health Association and the Center for Disease Control all favor the mandatory measure.
"When it was proposed earlier, central administration was concerned about the side effects, so we made it voluntary," Ebbin said.
The possible side effects include encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain that occurs once for every million doses.
A number of cases might be expected in a large childhood population over a period of time even when vaccines are not administered, according to the Center for Disease Control.
The possiblity of contracting encephalitis through live measle vaccinations is far less than that for natural measles, which
is one per 2,000 reported cases, according to literature from Merck & Co., a distributor of the vaccine.
Thirty percent of American colleges and universities, including Loyola Marymount and the California State University system have immunization requirements, Ebbin said.
"It's a risk-benefit issue," said Ebbin,
adding that schools have mandatory immunization requirements because they believe the benefits outweigh the risks.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the total number of cases diagnosed at the university remained at 45. Although no new cases have been reported on campus, officials at the Student Health Center said (See Measles, page 13)
