Daren Kesterson left his duties as a Los Angeles City firefighter to help fight the SoCal wildfires.
By JESSICA TYERMAN
Staff Writer
The Southern California wildfires raised more than challenges for firefighter Daren Kesterson. They endangered his life.
At one point, Kesterson, a Los Angeles City firefighter, doubted he and his crew would make it through the flames alive.
“If it hits us head-on, 1 don't know if we’re gonna make it,” Kesterson said he told his crew.
Kesterson, a 10-year veteran of the Los Angeles City Fire Department, was awoken at midnight on Oct. 23 to be sent to wildfires in San Bernardino and San Diego while the fires were at their peaks.
About 750,000 acres were burned ‘ in the Southern California wildfires, 500,000 in San Diego alone, the Los Angeles Times reported. Kesterson, who is stationed at Fire Station No. 15, directly across from campus, was on the front lines to fight several of these fires.
The first assignment
Kesterson first joined other Los Angeles City firefighters to take on out-of-control flames in a residential community in San Bernardino. ; . ■
, 'A couple 100-foot flame lengths were coming right at us and it sounded like a freight train," Kesterson said. “It was awesome.” >

Saturday’s football game against UCLA is sold out. Officials plan to prevent students from rushing the field.
By JACKSON DeMOS
Sports Editor
At the USC-UCLA game planning meeting last week, athletic officials said they were unsure whether the kickoff time for tomorrow’s match-up would be at 12:37 or 12:38.
“We have to wait on the exact time from ABC,” USC assistant £Tthletic director John Henderson said. ' *■
It was one of many examples of a game that has been planned for months by various departments in both schools and has a minute-by-minute breakdown of the action that takes place when the athletes are not playing.
At 12:24:30, the UCLA band will take the field from the north sidelines for a 5.5 minute pregame show. At 12:30:20, the USC band will play “Conquest-"
“The pregame and halftime, especially pregame, is scripted out by the second, based upon when the teams leave the field and the TV coverage," said Tony Fox, associate director of the USC band.
ABC begins its broadcast at 12:30 p.m., and the sold-out game starts less thin 10 minutes later. USC athletic department officials are telling fans to arrive early. The 92,000 capacity Coliseum will open at 10:30 a.m. — 30 minutes earlier than normal.
Because of the lack of parking around the Coliseum and -on campus, shuttles will go between the Staples Center and the Coliseum. The shuttle is free, but parking is $10. •
The game has been sold-out for weeks, but there may be more USC fans at the game than normal.
“UCLA gave back tickets,” said Don Ludwig, director of recreation sports at USC. “If the game is neutral, or should be close, then the tickets are very hard to find. There are obviously more Trojans who want to go than Bruins."
USC officials have stressed appropriate game conduct • and student ticket sales in the days leading up to the 73rd crosstown rivalry game. ' j?
