University plans no immediate changes in graduate education

Despite receiving widespread criticism from last year7s accreditation commission, the university has not planned any immediate organizational changes to the operation of its graduate schools, said Cornelius Pings, university provost.
However, Pings has sent a memorandum to academic vice presidents and deans asking them to consider questions raised by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges accrediting commission and also to think of ways to counterbalance the educational structure.
The accreditation commission said in its report, based on the university's self-study for accreditation and an on-campus visitation last year, that "graduate education at USC is extremely decentralized.
"The Ph.D. programs and more than half of the master's programs (of which there are many) are under the jurisdiction of the Graduate School; many other programs are operated entirely out of
other schools and the college or departments," the report said.
It stated that the present system "often makes quality assurance, equitable graduate financial support and interdisciplinary collaboration difficult. It also creates some question about-the role of the Graduate School."
In his memorandum, Pings noted that the accreditation commission found instances in which there were only slight distinctions between re-search-oriented and professionally oriented degrees.
"Apparently some graduate programs are too far from surveillance. However, it is not clear that anything will change," Pings said, adding that accreditation commissions are supposed to pay attention to problems but not to dictate the outcome.
"I don't think the commission had anv particular graduate school or part of the program in mind," he said.
"We’ll take a good look at the programs. We'U review and decide if there are ways to consolidate

Resident deadline

Today may be the last opportunity’ for residents of off-campus apartments who lost in the parking lottery to purchase a parking space at their building.
Students in the apartment complexes of Troy apartments and community apartments (15 apartment buildings in the Adams Boulevard area) who did not win a space in the lottery may go to Parking Operations today and purchase any remaining spaces not claimed by lottery winners.
Approximately 4,000 residents of off-campus apartments entered the parking lottery last week. However, the university-only has slightly more than
3,000 parking spaces available in these apartments. Parking Operations personnel said.
Lottery winners in the Cardinal Gardens area were instructed to purchase their parking permit by Tuesday. Residents of Troy and community area apartments had to purchase their permit by Wednesday — or relinquish their spot.
On Wednesday, Cardinal Gardens area residents had the opportunity to purchase any spots that lottery winners had forfeited. By 1 p.m. Wednesday, all available spots were sold out.
Today, Troy and community residents can purchase parking permits under this space-available system. However, they must purchase a space in their own building and not a neighboring apartment building, according to Parking Operations personnel.
Plans have been made by Parking Operations to hold an additional lottery for a limited number of spaces in Centennial Apartments, which is the only building that has not or is not anticipated to sell all its spaces. The spaces will be offered to residents of other apartment buildings.
