Rape attempt suspects to be arraigned

The two male university students suspected of attempting to rape a sorority member on March 8 will be arraigned on March 29 if the Los Angeles County District Attorney decides today to file charges, said Sgt. John Rice of the Los Angeles Police Department Southwest division.
Scott Weldon, 21, and Neil Higger, 21, were arrested on March 14 and 15 respectively for assault with an intent to commit rape, Rice said. The suspects were released on $7,500 bail each on the days they were arrested, he added.
According to University Security records, one suspect was arrested on March 15 at 707 W. 28th St., the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity house. An ATO fraternity member who wished to remain unidentified said Weldon and Higger are members of the ATO fraternity.
The source's claim was double-checked in the 1984 El Rodeo, the university yearbook, where both suspects were pictured in the ATO photo. Their names were listed in the caption below the photo.
The suspects are scheduled to be arraigned in Division 30 of the Los Angeles Municipal Court before Judge Elva Soper, LAPD detectives said.
Rice would not disclose the location of the alleged rape attempt, for fear of jeopardizing the investigation. He added that he is completing all the interviews for the investigation, and expects to be ready to present the case to the district attorney on Wednesday.
According to University Security reports, the victim was allegedly ipproached on March 8 by the two students between 12:30 and 1:30 a.m. Allegedly, both suspects had been drinking and molested the victim, trying to remove her clothes, said University Security Sgt. Michael Kennedy.

Pizza chain offers $10,000 for lead in murder case

A 19-year-old deliveryman for Domino's Pizza was shot and killed early Sunday morning in the parking lot of the Vermont Avenue pizza outlet, said a police homicide detective investigating the case.
Domino's Pizza Inc., a nationwide corporation, is offering a $10,000 reward for information that leads to the conviction of the person or persons responsible for the killing of Darrin L. Hubert of Los Angeles. However, police said they have not identified any suspects.
Los Angeles Police Det. Richard Hoffman, one of the investigators in the case, said two men allegedly confronted Hubert at 1:40 a.m. Sunday while he was backing out of the Domino's Pizza parking lot on Vermont Avenue and 36th Street — directly across the street from the university's guard gate six.
Hoffman said several witnesses at the scene — employees of
the store and customers — said they saw the two men shoot Hubert and then take the truck. He said Hubert was rushed to the California Hospital at 1414 S. Hope St. and died of gunshot wounds at 5 a.m.
Hoffman said he would not give any other specifics concerning the cause of death or details of the killing because of the reward money.
No suspects have been identified by police, but Hoffman said that detectives believe that the suspects are both male Latinos.
Hoffman said he has a physical description of one suspect — provided by witnesses. The one suspect is believed to be 5'6" to 5'8", weighs 130 to 150 pounds and is about 19 to 25 years old. Police do not have a description of the other man.
Hoffman said he does not believe the two men are university students.

A meeting between James Dennis, vice president of student affairs, and leaders of the Row was held at the Kappa Alpha Theta house on Thursday concerning relations between the Los Angeles Police Department and residents of 28th Street.
In the past four weeks, two major incidents with the LAPD have negatively affected the image of the Row and the relationship with the officers at the Southwest division of the LAPD, Dennis said.
Trouble began on Feb. 22 when a disturbance on the Row drew officers from three divisions of the LAPD and one police helicopter to disperse an estimated crowd of 250. The crowd had gathered by the time LAPD arrived after a fight between members of the Alpha Tau Omega and Kappa Sigma members.
Witnesses present at Thursday's meeting said the trouble was aggravated by "too much show of force."
Another "major disturbance" occurred March 14 following a Greek Week party at Julie's Restaurant that resulted in one student being arrested for disturbing the peace and being under the influence of alcohol.
A new leadership has command of the Southwest division that has a commitment to protect the citizenry, laws and property in a consistent manner, Dennis said.

The day manager at Domino's, who said she was a friend of Hubert, said "a lot of people at the Domino's here cared for him.
"(Hubert) was one of of the best drivers (we had)," said Ramiro Villalobos, assistant manager of the store, who witnessed the killing.
