OLD-FASHIONED FUN
. Founders Day gives 1880 " ambience to Alumni Park
By Gail Asayama
Staff Writer
The festive activities of the Founders Day celebration gave class-weary students a day to recall what good old-fashioned fun was all about. Students hopped, jumped and ate their way through Alumni Park.
The festivities began at noon with a picnic featuring free hot dogs, soft drinks and popcorn. Richard Saukko came out on Traveler II (Traveler III was at home resting) to kick off the Tro-jan Spirit early in the day. Saukko, who has been riding the mascot for 17 years, later joined the Trojan band for a march down University Avenue.
The games in Alumni Park included the pie eating contest, the three-legged race, dunking machine, Trojan Bookstore traveling circus, tug of war, jelly bean guess, trivia contest, egg-toss contest, hairy legs contest, sandsculpture, balloon ride, balloon stomp, raffle and the Trojan Marching Band raffle.
The booths were manned by Helenes, University Affairs and Alumni Special Events personnel. All students who entered the contest were given “I did it at USC Oct. 6” buttons.

could win $10 or $20 gift certificates, redeemable at the bookstore. The dunking machine featured a prize that offered immediate satisfaction. The good-sports included Bernard Pipkin, geology professor, James Appleton, vice-president of student affairs, Carol Pike, head song girl, and Tom Murrin, head yell leader.
The Hairy Legs Contest offered a $20 prize for each group winner. Joyce Lancaster, one winner, was judged in a separate category from the male competitors.
At the corner of University Avenue and 36th Street, students could take a ride 40 feet high in a hot-air balloon. The enormous balloon attracted students from all over campus as
they lined up for their free ride.
The Master of Ceremonies was Robert Wood, former president of CBS and a member ofthe USC Board of Trustees, who announced the winners'of each contest.
The Trojan Marching Band paraded down University Avenue at 2:15 p.m., playing Conquest and Fight On. They played until 2:30 p.m. and continued on to University Village for pep rally with John Robinson, head football coach, mem-bersofthe football team, the yell leaders and the song girls.
The Alumni House was rededicated as Widney Alumni House in tribute to Robert Widney, one ofthe university’s founders.
