Title	Greeting card from Eugene Dennis and family to Charlotta Bass, 1953, Atlanta, Georgia and New York City
Description	New Year's card from Eugene Dennis, his wife, Peggy, and their son, Gene, Jr., sent to Charlotta Bass in 1953. The cover of the card contains a photograph of Eugene Dennis atop a bookcase in his home in New York City. At the time the card was sent, Dennis, secretary general of the Communist Party USA, was serving a five-year term in a federal penitentiary in Atlanta, Georgia, for violating the Smith Act. The Smith Act made it illegal for anyone in the United States to advocate, abet or teach the desirability of overthrowing any government. The card contains a message from Peggy Dennis, stating that "although he has been in prison for two and one-half years, Gene is ever confident that more and more people will come to realize that amnesty for all political prisoners of the Smith and McCarran Acts means the liberation of the Bill of Rights, the restoration of democratic liberties to all Americans, the furtherance of the cause of world peace."
