EMMA LAZARUS FEDERATION OF JEWISH WOMEN'S CLUBS cHLI^JIe^^11^ NEW Y°RK 10' N' Y* Sept 11,1952 Hilda Freedman President TO ALL EMMA LAZARUS CLUBS: Ann Hershkowitz Vice-President Dear Sisters: Lillian Maglicano Secretary-Treasurer We haye faeen asked whaf we think Qnd how WG sfand$ on the CAMPAIGN OF DEFIANCE OF UNJUST LAWS directed by the African National Congress and the South African Indian Congress. Our answer was one of confidence that Emma Lazarus club members would respond with understanding and warm-hearted cooperation. We see this defiance movement on the part of the Negro people in South Africa in the same light as the national liberation movement which culminated in the establishment of the State of Israel. We understand that the independence and the future of Israel depends upon the successful outcome of such struggles for equality and independence as that which is taking place in South Africa and other colonies. Moreover, as progressive Jewish women in the United States, we recognize the fact that growing anti-Semitism which threatens us with the loss of our hard-won liberties alongside all freedom-loving Americans, is fostered by the same forces which spearhead Negro discrimination. We therefore greet the African Negro liberation movement. In this spirit, we call your attention to the enclosed educational material on South Africa for discussions in the clubs and urge you take Immediate steps to have the enclosed petitions filled out in support of the Defiance struggle in South Africa. You will find that the petitions carry a column for contributions. While we should not refuse signatures without contributions, we should not neglect this means of giving some tangible support to the Defiance movement. The Council on South African Affairs seeks to raise $5,000.00 to be sent to South Africa. Every quarter, dime or nickel you collect with the signatures, will help to make this possible. The deadline for gathering up of these petitions is OCTOBER 15th. We are sending you only f petitions. We are confident that you will have the petitions f iI led out and returned in good time to meet the deadline.
