Attorney Vince Monroe Townsend Jr. is seated in the front row, holding his hands on his knees. To his left are Rev. J. Raymond Henderson, pastor of the Second Baptist Church; Charlotta Bass, holding a purse; Rev. Clayton Russell, of the People's Independent Church of Christ; and Mabel V. Gray, a member and leader of many African-American women's clubs. The man at the left in the back row, facing away from the camera, is attorney Ben Margolis, a civil libertarian attorney and Bass' personal lawyer. Dr. Foster, a Los Angeles physician, is seated in the back row, third from left.
