Charles H. Matthews, the second African-American to become a Los Angeles Deputy District Attorney, is seated third from left. Frederick Madison Roberts, the former California state assemblyman, stands against the wall, his arms folded over his chest. The California Eagle consistently pursued and publicized cases of suspected police brutality and abuse.
