Description	Photograph of Fannie E. Benjamin talking on the phone. This photograph was published in the "Trail Blazers" column of the California Eagle with the caption, "Fannie E. Benjamin, Trail Blazers, Musician and Mortician." Benjamin played the organ at the People's Independent Church of Christ from 1923 until 1962, and at the Congregational Church of Christian Fellowship from 1963 until her death in 1996. A native of Denver, Benjamin moved to Los Angeles when she was nine years old, and became the first African-American to graduate from Los Angeles High School. She studied piano, organ, theory and teaching at USC, and upon completion of her studies performed a concert at Los Angeles Philharmonic Hall. Benjamin was also a funeral director, and worked as a counselor at several Los Angeles mortuaries.
