Photograph of strikers picketing at Universal Die Casting, located at 5001 S. Santa Fe Avenue in Los Angeles. The picketers, members of the International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers, Local 700, include, from left, Claude Morris holding hands with Eleanor Albino, Rita Serna, Celestino Marquez (in leather jacket), and Gertrude Valdez (holding sign). Union members who worked at Universal and three other die casting plants demanded a seven-and-one-half-cent per hour wage hike and an additional paid holiday. After company officials failed to make an alternative salary offer, union members struck the four companies on Jan. 28, 1948. Company officials eventually agreed to the union's proposed salary hike and added Memorial Day to their list of paid holidays. Union members accepted the companies' offer on Feb. 2, ending the three-day strike.
