Description	William Schneiderman receives a warm greeting from his daughter, Ellen, and his wife, Leah, upon his release from a Los Angeles jail. Schneiderman, a leader of the California Communist Party, was among 15 Communist Party members who were indicted under the Smith Act, which made it a federal crime to advocate the overthrow of any United States government by force or violence. Schneiderman was arrested in August 1951 and served 138 days in jail before the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ordered his release on $10,000 bail.
