| Description (English with transliteration) | The cover page of Zritel', no.1, June 5, 1905. The color illustration depicts a man standing in a small dark room, which looks like a jail cell, staring through a window at red rays, presumably, those of the rising sun of revolution. "G. Gints?"has been penciled by the collector D.I. Koltel'nikov.; The Petersburg Governor-General D. F. Trepov characterized “Zritel’” in a letter of June 30, 1905 to the censors. He wrote: “Despite the system of innuendoes that the editors of this journal have adopted, as a consequence of which the reader is drawn into revolutionary ideas which are never stated explicitly in the text of the stories or in the captions to the illustrations; [but] the ideas being presented are so comprehensible and expressed so graphically that they leave no room for doubt in even a little developed mind. Thus for example in the first issue of the journal on the cover page there is a picture of a man in a dungeon looking out a window from which a blazing red sunset is visible” (cited in Botsianovskii and Gollerbakh, 176). |

На ней мужчина смотрит из окна маленькой темной комнаты, похожей на камеру, на красные лучи восходящего солнца, - очевидно, солнца революции. Надпись карандашом: "Г. Гинц?"; На журнал обратил внимание петербургский генерал-губернатор Д.Ф. Трепов. В своем письме в Цензурный комитет от 30 июня 1905 года он дал "Зрителю" следующую характеристику: "Несмотря на усвоенную редакцией означенного журнала систему постоянных недомолвок, вследствие чего читатель лишь "наводится" на ту или иную мысль революционного характера, которая никогда не договаривается ни в тексте рассказов, ни в подписях к иллюстрациям журнала; проводимые им идеи настолько понятны и выражаются столь образно, что не оставляют места сомнениям даже в мало развитом уме. Так, наприм., в № 1-м журнала, на наружной его странице, изображен человек в темнице, смотрящий в окно, где видна загорающаяся красная заря" (цит. по Боцяновский и Голлербах, с. 176). |
