| Description (English with transliteration) | The cover page of Maski, no.1, 1906 with a color illustration titled "Chervonnyi tuz, ili plameneiushchee serdtse svobody" (The Ace of Hearts or the Burning Heart of Freedom). It depicts a strange male creature with a red burning heart in place of his head wearing a black suit with a long gown and standing on top of the globe. A monogram of the illustrator, "S.Ch." is on the bottom of the globe. The collector D.I. Koltel'nikov has penciled in above: "Ris. [picture by] S. Chekhonin (Masanov)" meaning that the artist was identified using Masanov's dictionary of pseudonyms. Koltel'nikov also penciled in: "Sm. o plamennom v zhurn. "Maliar" 1906 N.4, s.8" [See the journal "Maliar" no.4, p.8, 1906 about burning] in the top center of the page; "Razneseno polnost'iu" [Distributed completely] in the left corner of the page; and "1 fevr. 1906" [February 1, 1906] in the top left corner of the page.; The drawing shows the duplicity of the Russian government whose intentions are not what they seem to be on the surface. On the one hand, the facial expression of the man is sad, and his eyes are closed as in mourning. Furthermore, the man's hands are crossed on his chest, which is a protective gesture contributing to the impression of the man's withdrawal. On the other hand, there is one open eye staring at the reader from the man's stomach, which implies that even though, outwardly, the man may seem to be removed from the outside world; inwardly, he is very much aware of his surroundings.; Moreover, the first part of the title, "Chervonnyi tuz" (The ace of hearts), suggests a possible allusion to the "Pikovyi tuz" (The ace of spades), which is the ace of hearts turned upside down and painted black - the color of the man's suit. In popular folklore and mythology, the ace of spades is often referred to as the death card, which may be reversed symbolism for the fate of Russia under its present government. Finally, the man's gigantic gown splits the globe under his feet and forms a vertical wall separating Russia from the rest of the Western world. As the man's head (or the ace of hearts) is going up in flames, so is the hope for the civil freedoms promised by the tsar in his October Manifesto (Natalia Dame, USC). Botsianovskii and Gollerbakh interpret the burning heart as an allegory which defines the relationship between Witte and the tsar by putting Witte in charge of the tsar's heart. Another possible interpretation could be the depiction of the tsar as a little boy whose tiny head is being overwhelmed by the heavy weight of his gigantic imperial crown (Botsianovskii and Gollerbakh, 76-77). |

В фольклоре и мифологии туз пик обычно является картой смерти, что намекает на мрачное будущее России в условиях царского строя. Помимо этого, огромная мантия мужчины делит земной шар под его ногами на две части, что визуально формирует вертикальную стену, отделяющую Россию от Запада. В то время как голова мужчины (или червонный туз) объята пламенем, подобная судьба может ожидать и свободы, обещанные царем в его Октябрьском манифесте (Наталья Дейм, USC). Боцяновский интерпретирует пылающее сердце как новую аллегорию взаимоотношений Витте и царя, в которой Витте достается честь охранять сердце государя.
